Being athletic and diabetic isn’t an easy balance to achieve sometimes and when one is first diagnosed it can be difficult, at best, to find the information an active diabetic needs to suit their passion for the outdoors.

gray jay population declining in Algonquin Provincial Park

We were saddened to read about this study from the University of Guelph. It speaks to how climate change may be affecting the Gray Jay, also known as a Whiskey Jack. This is one of our favorite feathered creatures and you’ll see a photo of one, taken in Algonquin Park on a wilderness canoe trip, featured on the masthead of the Tidbits feature on our website.

As I am trying to get an early start to the day and I sit here checking OAC email, my mind is wandering. It is early and a few hours before the phone lines are turned on. While sipping my coffee an email catches my eye. It is from the Globe and Mail and contains a link to a photo essay called 15 things to see and do in Canada before you die. I enjoy the little travel feature but two in particular spark my wanderlust. One is kayaking the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and the other is Bike the Cabot Trail.

Why I love running:

As a mother of three children running is the ideal activity to keep
physically and mentally well. It takes minimal effort and arranging to put
on the shoes an step out the door. Running burns off 100 calories every 10
minutes, clears your head, strengthens multiple muscle groups and keeps me
looking great.

As far as funny moments go my children understand that the only reason to
interrupt my run with a phone call to my cell is that they just had to phone
911 a moment ago.

When I did my first half marathon with a bunch of friends we showed up to
the area where it started very early. We parked and settled into a Starbucks
for some breakfast and coffee. When we came out to get to the start line we
realized that our car wad parked on the race course and had been towed!
Luckily the impound lot was close by so we ran to it, got the car reparked
got our bibs and last minute gear and ran to the start. We arrived about 5
minutes after the last half marathon starters had crossed the start line.
Thank goodness for chips because I ran that half with my now husband and
made my goal of sub 2 hrs!

Thank you to all who participated. Stay tuned, there’s a rumor flying around Outdoor Adventure Canada that we will be hosting a similar contest in March 2012 for the sequel to Run Like a Mother.

Kirk’s memorial memorial gathering has been changed. “Travelling On: Celebrating the Life and Passions of Kirk Wipper” will be on Sunday, May 1st, 2011, 2 pm at the Canadian Canoe Museum.

Bill Mason Memorial Scholarship Fund – Annual Fundraising Auction

Most Canadian canoeists have been influenced by Bill Mason whether directly or indirectly. He was an avid paddler, a wonderful film maker, and a great environmental champion.

In 1990 Paddle Canada created a scholarship fund in memory of Mason. This fund is for students pursuing education in environmental studies. April 21st is Bill Mason’s birthday and also the day of the annual auction which raises money for this scholarship.
